"In my first year on the job in California as a new librarian fresh out of graduate school, I attended one of Follett's Automation Celebrations to see specifics about this online card catalog that was in my library. In addition to finding out how to use Follett, another session I attended was on MARC Magician software."

"At the session, Jeff Davinni showed us examples of what we could do with the program to make our card catalogs user friendly and up-to-date. It seemed so easy, and I went back to work and ordered the software the next week. The card catalog that I inherited with my job was a mess as many records had only an author and a title. The vast majority of book titles that did contain full MARC records had many errors and misspellings. Since receiving MARC Magician my Library Tech. and I have spent very little time changing thousands and thousands of inaccurate records. We have used it to change misspellings, clean up records we receive from book orders, and add new full MARC records. The powerful global editing made it a snap to fix our videos that were cataloged as books and within minutes updated 3,000 fiction books to all have consistent call numbers. Another great feature is that it takes you step by step on how to create a record, and you can always look at the changes made before you import the records back into your database, making it virtually impossible to mess up! As a result, our card catalog has become a tool that enables our students to search for information by keywords, title and author instead of having one of us do it for them, as we have had to do in the past due to the incomplete records."
