Using Magic Recon is simple. First, export copies of MARC records from your library automation
system and import them into Magic Recon.
Magic Recon works by comparing your MARC records to records in our extensive MARC database.
Material type, title, author, publication, and publisher are all used to compare records.
These comparisons are rated. The more in common records have, the higher rating they receive.
Highly rated records are considered matches. Magic Recon has determined matches to be full
versions of your original records. Your matches will be merged with your original records to
create new, full records.
Records that don’t rate highly enough to be considered matches are possible matches. Possible
matches are near misses. You can look through these records and try to spot matches where Magic Recon
couldn’t. When you determine that a record has a match, it is moved to the matches group.
Records that you couldn’t find matches for are moved to the no hits group.
Records that have low rated matches are considered no hits. You have the option
to export, catalog, remove your no hits,
or fix them and match again.
Work with your matches, possible matches, and no hits in any order as they are all stored in
Magic Recon until you export or delete them.
Once Magic Recon is finished matching your records, export them from Magic Recon. Then import
the updated records back into your library automation system, replacing the original, brief
records. Magic Recon provides you with step-by-step instructions.
Magic Recon is available on-line 24-7.
